At Work Workouts

Sitting at a desk all day gets old fast! By two o’clock your toes are tapping, legs are shaking, and you’re so distracted by the jitters that you aren’t able to be  as productive as you need to be. When you are at work, it’s hard to make time to get up and take a walk, other than going from meeting to meeting. Our bodies aren’t meant to be sitting down for eight hours straight, yet for some reason professionals put their bodies through this stress day in and day out.

According to a study by National Center for Biotechnology Information, sedentary behavior, as in sitting down, is consistently linked to more than 30 chronic diseases and conditions. These conditions include a 112% increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes, and a 147% increase in the risk of heart disease. Yes work is extremely important but you must find a balance with your health, as good quality work relies on your good quality health. Here are 6 simple at work exercises you can do to increase your movement throughout the day to maintain and improve  your health and to get you through that midday restlessness!

  1. Calf Raises – Stand in front of a desk or other piece of furniture you can hold onto for balance. Raise your heels of the floor, stand on your toes, and slowly lower them. 
  2. Wall Sits – Rest your back against a wall and move your feet away from the wall. The wall should be supporting the weight of your back and your knees should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Hold the position as long as possible. 
  3. Chair Dips – Place the palms of your hands on your chair and your feet on the floor. Move your rear end off of the edge of your seat. Bend your elbows and lower your body. Straighten your arms to return to the starting position. 
  4. Chair Squats – Stand in front of your chair and face forward. Slowly squat down until your rear its the chair, then stand straight back up. 
  5. Stair Repeats – Set a goal of how many floors you want to walk up and down in 15 minutes. Try to meet or beat your goal the next day.

BONUS: Leg Kick Back – Standing tall, balance on one leg and lift the opposite leg straight back. Keep the lifted leg as straight as possible, focusing on squeezing the muscles on that side.

5 Healthy Habits HR can Encourage to Increase Productivity

Healthier employees makes for a stronger workplace. Think about the last time you indulged in a cheat meal maybe one too many times or maybe didn’t get up and take a little walk in the middle of the work day? How did you feel? Probably a little sluggish, motivation was hard to come by, and it probably took you a little longer to get your work done.

While work may seem like the most important thing in the moment, and given it is very important, having good health is the long term goal. Not only are healthy habits beneficial for the r5ksmkyosc-peter-wendtindividual employees, but it also can help increase productivity – making for a stronger workplace. According to the Health Enhancement Research Organization, employees who eat healthy all day long were 25 percent more likely to have higher job performance. In that same survey it was found that employees who exercise for at least 30 minutes, three times a week, are 15 percent more likely to have higher job performance.

So how could you, as a Human Resources Manager, help encourage health habits to create a productive workplace?

  1. Schedule once-a-month lunchtime speakers on nutrition, stress management and exercise. Offer a healthy free lunch or organize a potluck where everyone brings in their favorite healthy recipe to share.
  2. Offer the option to have a standing desk. There are several proven health benefits to standing while at work and it is an easy way to jump start healthy habits.
  3. Contact your local American Heart Association, American Lung Association andMarch of Dimes; they all provide speakers and publications. Also, local fire departments and the American Red Cross offer on-site CPR and first aid training.
  4. Organize company social groups that can be active together. They could range from pick up soccer games at lunch, or a morning walking club. Encourage people to be social and active!
  5. Implement a corporate wellness program within in the company that will offer a subsidy for a gym membership or a discount on a fitness tracker. Fitness can be expensive, and taking some of the cost off of your employees shoulders can help encourage them to get started!

Physical Exercise for the Busy Employee

I find that some days are so jam-packed with activities, that there’s little time for anything else – including a workout. Between work, family, and social events, there’s no room left in my calendar. I’m completely booked up. But I’ve found that there is sometimes more wiggle room than what appears at first sight and I’ve still found a few ways to get active even on the busiest of days.

My first step is to plan out my week. I schedule my workouts in my google calendar for the days when I have more time. I block out that hour so that other activities can’t be scheduled at that time. It’s reserved just for me – and a much-needed stress-reducing bike ride.

Another idea that has worked for me is to take a walk while taking lunch. A quick 10-minute walk can be refreshing and lets your body move around a little.

I often get off the subway a stop early and get an extra 10-minute morning/evening walk in as well. Including lunch, that’s a 30-minute walk on a day I thought I was too busy to move around.

If I know it’s a busy week for me and I won’t make it to my yoga class, I’ll make sure to take the stairs instead of the elevator.Walking up and down 5 flights of stairs 3 times a day is great for strengthening the leg muscles and a fantastic way to be active!

One step further – though I may not have an hour to workout during the day, I do have 5 minutes each hour. 12 hours later – you’ve done a 60-minute workout without changing your clothes. There’s a lot of ways I do this – pushups and sit-ups (alternating between both), dips and squats (using my office chair), walking up and down the stairs. Anyway, it’s healthy to take 5 minutes away from your computer each hour. Short breaks actually increase productivity! You might look silly, but I’ve learned that after the first few times, people get used to seeing it and it can actually inspire them to do the same

So often we get overwhelmed with the tasks we set for ourselves, but they can be broken down into little bite-sized pieces and still be just as effective.

How to Engage Employees: Power of With

While I was contemplating what to write as the first FitBliss blog entry, I browsed through different channels, Forbes.com, Rand Report, Harvard Business Review Articles, to understand what the ‘experts’ were saying about implementing a corporate wellness solution.

Here’s what I think: financial incentives can back-fire when the motives are “for the employee” rather than with the employee. People understand the benefits of exercise and healthy eating, just do it with them.

Short Example

I’ll give you an example I think we can all relate to one way or another: when I was a child and my parents wanted me to do my homework or help clean the dinner table, they would say: “if you finish your homework you can go play James Bond on your Nintendo 64.”

Results

Of course I did it, and I was very happy! After a week of that incentive, I wanted more… I wanted to play James Bond and I also wanted to go to my neighbor’s house to play together. My parents weren’t happy with my increasing demands and I wasn’t happy with them not obliging!

It was starting to get challenging for them to find a way to show me the value of doing my homework or do my chores because the carrots were becoming unsustainable. And that’s where incentive-based wellness fails

Better approach

Here’s an approach that I really liked from my parents, they started to do homework with me and we washed the dishes together as they would teach me, while doing it with me!

The carrot was non-existent, rather a shared experience was the intrinsic motivator, an intangible that can’t be one-up’d every week by an extrinsic motivator. It became the culture of our family.

Takeaway

Simply put, if we encourage our employers to engage & demonstrate wellness with their employees, we have long-term cultural sustainability (all while saving significant corporate dollars). This makes sense.
