5 Simple Steps to Promote a Healthy Workplace in 2015

So you’ve got your new year plans in place, and your wellness strategy is one of them. (Well, if you make up the 98 percent of large employers or 73 percent of smaller employers that offer at least one wellness program, that is.) But many of you wish you could do even more to support your team’s health this year.

You see, even though most independent studies show that wellness programs produce little to no cost savings, you know that healthy employees can still offer serious benefits — like improvements in culture, morale, satisfaction, commitment, performance, turnover and even recruiting.

And all of that is why we at FitBliss have a resolution for you: Stop wishing that you could do more for your team’s health this year and start acting. Even if you don’t have the resources to launch another full-out wellness strategy, you can take simple actions today to promote a healthy workplace.

Here are five of them:

  1. Promote walking meetings.
    Encourage your team to schedule meetings outside of the office. Walking meetings can stimulate creativity and refresh your team members, while never actually breaking productivity.

  2. Encourage fun at the office.
    Did you know that when someone’s not having fun at work, they’re likely to eat more? Obviously, this sort of eating can lead to mindless or unhealthy snacking. Grab some games for the office (ping pong, anyone?) or encourage the team to head out for fun lunches to keep that work enjoyment level high.

  3. Place unhealthy snacks in strategic locations.
    You could just replace unhealthy snacks in the office with fruits and vegetables, but that’s not your only option. Putting that candy bowl at a distance from desks, or even the simple act of placing a lid on it, will lower the amount of candy taken out.

  4. Incorporate wellness into incentives.
    Next time you need an incentive for a high-performing team member, purchase a month’s worth of their favorite type of workout class, or give them a gift card for some new workout gear.

  5. Rely on technology to do the promoting.
    There’s all kinds of wellness technology out there, and a lot of it is self motivating. The good news about that? You can launch it once, then let it continuously motivate your team to improve their own wellness. Wearables are a great place to start. Depending on the size of your team, you could consider purchasing Fitbits for everyone, or as a reward for team members who hit certain health goals.
